Background information
for typographic design

The design brief was to find a lettering as well as the lettering of the entrances made of profile letters in the form of a technically modern and energetically sustainable illuminated lettering (at least 80% savings with the same brightness) for the exterior lettering of the Augsburg Curt-Frenzel-Stadium (CFS) in the course of the modernization (conversion of the open stadium into an indoor arena). The Curt-Frenzel Stadium is both the winter sports center of the city of Augsburg and a stadium of the German Ice Hockey League, where the ice hockey club »Augsburger Panther« plays its home games.

The stadium name commemorates the publisher of the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung »Curt Frenzel« (1900-1970), who was the chairman of the Augsburger Eislaufverein (AEV) for many years and a great supporter of Augsburg ice hockey. In 1971, the stadium was named after him. The CFS is operated by the City of Augsburg.

In terms of its structural form, the CFS is a sober, unpretentious industrial purpose-built structure. The exterior forms of the stadium are primarily based on the geometric shapes of triangle and quadrilateral. The same applies to the structure of the exterior cladding as well as to the nighttime light installation and the resulting visible mounting grid below the then transparent exterior cladding.

The new lettering of the CFS consists of majuscules of a constructed grotesque, the form of which was modeled on a classic »Futura« by Paul Renner (1878-1956). However, in contrast to a work typeface, the typometry, i.e. the letter architecture, was specially adapted in its proportions for three-dimensionality (i.e. the x, y, z coordinate axes). The sans-serif majuscules thus adapt in form and material to the color impression and the light reflection of the stadium or the surroundings as well as the light installation at night, especially when the view falls on the lettering from the side.

Both the former lettering in a »Futura Black« – i.e. the no longer existing »stadium lettering«, which was cast in concrete at the time – and the new lettering of the CFS thus originate from the same typeface era. Both typefaces were inspired by Bauhaus typography and cut strictly according to the design principles of »circle and straight line«, which is very much in keeping with the CFS’s functional building and nighttime light installation – and perhaps even represents a kind of typographic tradition of the CFS.
